Detection of landmines and underground utilities from acoustic and GPR images with a cepstral approach

چکیده
This paper introduces a cepstral approach for the automatic detection of landmines and underground utilities from acoustic and ground penetrating radar (GPR) images. This approach is based on treating the problem as a pattern recognition problem. Cepstral features are extracted from a group of images, which are transformed first to 1-D signals by lexicographic ordering. Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and polynomial shape coefficients are extracted from these 1-D signals to form a database of features, which can be used to train a neural network with these features. The target detection can be performed by extracting features from any new image with the same method used in the training phase. These features are tested with the neural network to decide whether a target exists or not. The different domains are tested and compared for efficient feature extraction from the lexicographically ordered 1-D signals. Experimental results show the success of the proposed cepstral approach for landmine detection from both acoustic and GPR images at low as well as high signal to noise ratios (SNRs). Results also show that the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is the most appropriate domain for feature extraction. 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Time-Reversal Ground-Penetrating Radar: Range Estimation With Cramér-Rao Lower Bounds
In this paper, first, a new range-estimation technique using time reversal (TR) for ground-penetrating-radar (GPR) applications is presented. The estimator is referred to as the TR/GPR range estimator. The motivation for this paper comes from the need of accurately estimating the location of underground objects such as landmines or unexploded ordinance for safe clearance. Second, the Cramér–Rao...

Over the past several years, ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems have been developed and improved upon to enable the accurate mapping of underground utilities and other structures. Many companies now consider the use of GPR a standard process in their Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) investigations. Now systems have been introduced that deploy multiple GPR antennas on one platform to all...
متن کاملFusion of forward-looking infrared camera and down-looking ground penetrating radar for buried target detection
In this paper, we propose a system to detect buried disk-shaped landmines from ground penetrating radar (GPR) and forward-looking long wave infrared (FL-LWIR) data. The data is collected from a test area of 500m 2 , which was prepared at the IPA Defence, Ankara, Turkey. This test area was divided into four lanes, each of size 25m length by 4m width and 1m depth. Each lane was first carefully cl...
متن کاملAutomatic Multiple Landmine Detection Using Gpr
The land mine crisis is all over frightening since there are presently 500 million unexploded, buried mines in about 70 countries. Governments are noticing this situation seriously since land mines are claiming the limbs and lives of civilians’ very day. A multiple of landmine extraction from the data which are obtained from the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Traditional algorithms targets on ...
متن کاملDetection of Shallowly Buried Landmines from Ground Penetrating Radar Signals
A method for detecting shallowly buried landmines using sequential GPR data is presented. After removing dominant coherent component of ground surface reflection from GPR data, three kinds of target features related to wave correlation, energy ratio, and signal arrival times are extracted. Since the detection problem treated here is reduced to a binary hypothesis test, an approach based on a li...
